LEGATUS — the Age of AdaptationLEGATUS — the Age of Adaptation: a chess card game with Command Orders

A game of command, deception, and strategy inspired by chess.

As a Legatus, you lead your army through a battlefield where plans rarely survive unchanged. Scouts bring unexpected news, reinforcements arrive, clever tricks are revealed, and fortune can suddenly favor either side. Every battle is different, and every decision can change its course.

The Battlefield

Classic chess, upgraded with command orders

Players still win through superior positioning and tactics — but every game begins with a custom deployment and plays with more excitement thanks to limited battlefield orders. Chess remains the foundation. Your formation is your first decision.

Deployment

Build your starting formation before the battle

Both armies start off the board. You choose where each piece stands — but the King must lead from the home rank and every new piece must connect to your formation.

  1. 01

    King first

Place your King on any square of your home rank.

  2. 02

    Connected formation

Every other piece must be placed on a square adjacent to a piece you already deployed.

  3. 03

    Alternate

Players take turns placing one piece at a time until all 32 pieces are on the board.

  4. 04

    Battle begins

Once deployment ends, the game proceeds with normal chess rules and Command Orders.

The Round

Each player turn

  1. Move01

    Move

Move one chess piece, following standard chess rules.

  2. Order02

    Order

Play one Command Order. Optional. Never more than one.

  3. Draw03

    Draw

Draw one Command Order, never above your hand limit.

  4. End Turn04

    End Turn

Pass the initiative to your opponent.

Important Rule

One card per turn.

No exceptions. This keeps the game feeling like chess — orders are tactical moments, not the focus.

Victory

Classic checkmate.

Nothing else. Immediately understandable to anyone who has played chess.

Command Orders

The deck — 64 cards, four categories

Every card is an order issued by the King or Commander. You aren’t playing a card game; you’re commanding an army.

Tactical Cards

33 cards

The core of the game. Orders that bend the geometry of the board.

Espionage Cards

13 cards

Small mind games. Information is a weapon before the pieces move.

Command Cards

11 cards

Decrees, pacts and bargains — the war fought off the board.

Recruitment Cards

7 cards

Bring the fallen back to the line. Rare, decisive, expensive in tempo.
