Chess where each commander also holds a deck of battlefield orders.
LEGATUS is our own variant, and the reason this guide exists. It keeps every chess rule intact and adds two layers: a deployment phase where you build your own starting formation, and a deck of Command Orders that you spend during the game. It plays in about 20 minutes, in the browser or on a physical board with the printable card sheet.

LEGATUS rules
- 01
Deployment: both armies start off the board. The king is placed first on your home rank, then players alternate placing one piece at a time, each new piece touching a piece you already placed.

Each turn: make one mandatory legal chess move, then optionally play one Command Order, then draw a card.
- 03
Command Orders come in four families — Tactics, Espionage, Logistics and Command — and cover shields, ambush traps, barricades, disarming a piece, stealing cards and bringing fallen pieces back.

The strongest orders cost pawns, which are sacrificed from your own army when the card resolves.
- 05
Standard checkmate ends the game. Chess movement, promotion and en passant are unchanged.
How it changes your play
Because you build your own formation, the opening is a design problem: every piece you place must be defended, and the shape you choose determines whether you play for a flank attack or a fortress.
Holding a card is a threat in itself. An opponent who knows you might have a shield or an ambush plays more cautiously than the position warrants.
