Bughouse
Two boards, four players, captured pieces passed to your partner.
Bughouse is the loudest game in any chess club. Two boards sit side by side; you and your partner play opposite colours, and every piece you capture becomes ammunition for them. It is played fast, usually with three- to five-minute clocks, and communication across the table is part of the game.

Bughouse rules
- 01
Two teams of two. Partners play opposite colours on adjacent boards.
- 02
A piece you capture is handed to your partner, who may drop it on an empty square on their board as a full move.
- 03
Pawns cannot be dropped on the first or eighth rank; a captured promoted pawn reverts to a pawn.
- 04
The game ends as soon as either board ends — one checkmate or flag fall decides the whole match.
- 05
Talking to your partner is allowed and expected ('don't trade your knight', 'I need a bishop').
How it changes your play
You are not playing your own board in isolation. Trading a knight can lose your partner the game if their king has a hole a knight can reach.
The clock is a weapon. Sitting on a move to deny your partner a piece — or to wait for one — is a core Bughouse skill.
Etiquette
Announce what you need and what you are about to give away. Silent Bughouse is losing Bughouse.
Never physically reach across to your partner's board; place captured pieces in the agreed spot between the boards.
Questions about Bughouse
- How many chess sets do I need?
- Two full sets and two clocks. Online, both boards are shown side by side automatically.
- Can we play Bughouse with three players?
- No — the game structurally needs four players on two boards. For a drop-mechanic game with two players, play Crazyhouse instead.
